In 2026, Massachusetts takes center stage in the nation’s Semi-quincentennial celebration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But here in the Massachusetts the story began long before July 4, 1776.
From the first shots fired on April 19, 1775, in Lexington and Concord, to the debates, boycotts, and bold acts of resistance in Boston, Massachusetts, is where the American Revolution truly began.
MA250 honors that legacy with exhibitions, reenactments, performances, family programs, lectures, and signature celebrations across every region of the state.

Why Massachusetts Matters in the American Revolution
Massachusetts was the center of revolutionary action. The Boston Massacre in 1770 intensified colonial unrest. The Boston Tea Party in 1773 challenged British authority. And on April 19, 1775, colonial militia stood their ground at Lexington Green and later at Concord’s North Bridge, where the “shot heard ’round the world” signaled the start of war.
By the time the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, Massachusetts had already endured siege, battle, and transformation.
In 2026, MA250 invites residents and visitors alike to experience these places where history unfolded and to reflect on 250 years of American democracy.
